It was started in 1172 by Donal Mor O’Brien, the last King of Munster. The design has strong indications of both Romanesque and gothic styles of architecture with Romanesque arches and doorways and gothic windows.

The first St Mary’s was built on land given to the church in 1820 by Governor Macquarie, who had been petitioned by Father John Joseph Therry for a site for a Catholic chapel. The site chosen was on the edge of town, close to the convict barracks and convict garden.
