OnePlus is no longer a startup. You know that. Prices are no longer commensurate with a company that has to enter the market for the first time. Prices are no more aggressive than once, adapted to a not yet well-developed reality that needs to be known.
So, What is the OnePlus 5?
With the OnePlus 3T, the Chinese ‘start-up’ finally made a phone that was nearly perfect. There’s no OnePlus 4 this year, but instead, the OnePlus 5 takes things up another level with a seriously packed spec sheet – and a higher price.
Now OnePlus has grown, is expanding, needs to provide assistance, wants to point to the top. So let’s start by saying that the new OnePlus 5 is offered at a basic price of $499 up to $559. Will it still be a flagship killer? We will see it … in this review!
Design & Materials
More appealing than past models. Compared to OnePlus 3 and 3T that seemed to back the HTC One M9, now 5 looks more like an iPhone, which I do not mind.
Made of anodized aluminum and available in two colors each associated with different technical characteristics: Dark Midnight Black version ( 8 GB RAM, 128 GB internal memory) and lighter Slate Gray version ( 6 GB / 64 GB ). Now cold to the touch, nice to handle, but also slippery. It does not hold dents excessively. Extremely solid, no crunches, but the size of the device is felt despite the side edges of the display being of minimal size. Lower and lower body parts of slightly lighter bands for better reception.
2.5D Display with rounded edges protected by Gorilla Glass 5. rounded also the lower parts of the device, but from the chamber less evident than in previous models. This results in better stability when resting on completely smooth surfaces.
Hardware
It has the new Snapdragon 835 processor and Adreno 540 GPU.
It looks like the screen mounted on OnePlus 5 is exactly the same as the 3T. 5,5 “ Full HD (1920 x 1080 p), the display is very oleophobic of the Optic AMOLED type. Optic because it allows you to reproduce more natural images and assign a custom color profile. It is also doubly polarized. In general, whites on these types of screens tend to bluff while on OnePlus 5 they are well balanced. Good viewing angle, but remember that given the AMOLED nature of the display, the colors, at a certain inclination, will become rainbows.

The games run is a miracle. I felt a better gaming experience than Samsung Galaxy S8. Probably everything is optimizable through software since the hardware component is equal if not higher than the device just mentioned.

It has the Precise and fast fingerprint sensor, but not as fast as other top-of-the-range competitors. Brightness sensor seems to be a bit lazy in understanding the amount of light the device is exposed to.
Interestingly, they did not remove the mythical 3.5mm jack. It comes with USB Type-C 2.0 input and a dual nano-SIM slot.
There is also the RGB notification LED that, unfortunately, is not very visible especially in the sunlight.
Software
It Onboard mounts Oxygen OS 4.5.5 based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Everything is fluid, snappy, extremely responsive. All this is accompanied by useful gestures (for quick start of the torch, camera, etc.). You can draw letters such as V, O, S, M, W which, when screened off, will allow you to perform a particular operation. Extremely useful than the 3-way knob for a different set of the notification settings.
It is also interesting to choose different color profiles for the display such as sRGB, DCI-P3 or a custom setting. There is also night mode (a yellow/orange filter is applied) and the read mode (black and white, enabled for viewing certain apps or manually).
Camera
The real news compared to 3T, in addition to a more up-to-date technical card, is the camera. Now the OnePlus 5 comes with a dual camera with dual LED flash and Sony sensors. The first rear sensor is 16 MP and can shoot videos up to 4K 30 fps and take very well defined photos even in low light conditions. Digital stabilization is not the top, you could work harder.
However, OnePlus has spent a lot of time on improving the algorithm for managing the camera. The captured colors are natural and red (black beast for photographic sensors) are well calibrated. The focal length is 1.7 and automatic HDR is supported, the focus is rather quick but certainly not the same as a laser sensor. It is obvious that more attention has been paid to photos than video. The latter is not always satisfactory.
The second sensor is a 20 MP cane: it simulates a 2x. Specific 1.6x are optical zoom, while 0.4x are digital. The shots are slightly less defined than the main camera and have a focal length of 2.6, so activation of this camera will only take place in good, if not great, brightness conditions.
The front chamber is 16 MP. It does not have LED flash, but the latter is simulated by the screen. The focal aperture of 2.0 allows good brightness even in low light. Well-defined shots, amazing quality, and good color tones.
Battery
It does not disappoint expectations even though its 3300 mAh capacity is slightly lower than the 3T, with the smallest Thickness of OnePlus 5. It guarantees a full day cover with intense use. However, if you use it for medium use, it will last 1 and a half days, or maybe a little more.
A full charge on the phone is turned off in 1 hour and 15 minutes thanks to the 5V 4A Dash Charge if recharging to a powered device will take longer.
Connectivity
Compared to the previous model, it now supports LTE connection up to 600 MB / s. Switching from shadow zones to signal engagement is quick and has no complications.
It is equipped with GPS + Glonass and having used it on a couple of occasions has proved to be accurate and smooth in establishing the correct position.
There are also classic NFC chips , Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac dual band with 2 × 2 MIMOs.
Audio
Speaker with incredibly deep, sharp and powerful sound at the right angle. It does not distort high-volume audio, the lower frequencies are far more than normal speakers that we commonly find in current smartphones.
The headset cap also produces a warm and sharp sound.
Quality price
And here we go back to the initial question. Price is one of the elements that, along with the characteristics of the phone in question, determine whether or not the flagship killer status is, in other words, whether it may be the best smartphone on the face of the Earth at a truly competitive price.
